5 acne myths that are keeping your skin broken out
Most acne advice on TikTok is wrong, contradictory, or both. Here are the five myths we untangle every week in clinic.
Most acne advice on TikTok is wrong, contradictory, or both. Here are the five myths we untangle every week in clinic.
Myth 1: "Acne means dirty skin." No. Acne is hormonal and genetic. Over-washing makes it worse by stripping the barrier and triggering more oil.
Myth 2: "Dairy causes acne." Sometimes. In about 20% of hormonal acne patients, eliminating dairy (especially skim milk, due to growth hormones) helps. For the other 80%, it doesn't move the needle. We test by eliminating and tracking. Not by guessing.
Myth 3: "Sun clears acne." Short-term, the inflammation dries up. Long-term, sun damage triggers more breakouts and worsens post-inflammatory marks. Bad trade.
Myth 4: "You'll grow out of it." Adult-onset acne is rising every year. Hormonal acne can start at 25 and last to 45. It needs treatment, not waiting.
Myth 5: "Accutane is dangerous." Isotretinoin is one of the most-studied medications in dermatology. It has real side effects that need monitoring, but for cystic and scarring acne it's life-changing. We prescribe it carefully. We don't fear it.
The right answer for almost everyone is a layered protocol: gentle cleanser, prescription topical, in-office work, and sometimes systemic therapy. Personalized, not algorithmic.
