Why your skin type matters more in Miami than anywhere else
Fitzpatrick I through VI react very differently to sun, lasers, and chemical peels. A provider who doesn't ask is a red flag.

The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin into 6 types based on melanin response to UV. South Florida has the full range. And the wrong treatment on the wrong type causes burns, scars, and lasting hyperpigmentation.
Type I-II: Light skin, burns easily, freckles. Most laser-friendly but highest skin-cancer risk in our climate.
Type III-IV: Mediterranean and Latina common. Tan easily, occasional burns. Most aesthetic-treatment combinations work but melasma triggers easily.
Type V-VI: Deeper Latina, Caribbean, African. Beautiful, resilient, and unsafe in older IPL devices. Requires Nd:YAG and trained injectors.
Miami's combination of year-round UV and ethnically diverse populations means a provider has to be fluent across all six types. We screen for it on every consult.
What to ask before any laser appointment:
- What Fitzpatrick type am I, and which device are you using? - Have you trained on dark skin specifically? - Will I need a melanin-suppressing prep cream?
If the answer to any of those is vague, walk out.
